About the Project

Personal safety concerns, including stalking and sexual violence, highlight the need for discreet and accessible ways to seek assistance during emergencies. This project proposes the AEGIS Earring, a smart wearable personal protection system that combines everyday jewellery with sensing, location tracking, and emergency communication. The concept aims to improve situational awareness and support faster responses, particularly for women travelling or walking alone. Its proposed design integrates proximity and motion sensors, a positioning system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a smart alert function to notify users of potential risks and share location information for emergency assistance. Additional proposed functions include vehicle detection, hidden-camera detection, emotion recognition, and access to medical information through near-field communication. The design approach places these components within a compact earring module containing a rechargeable battery, with solar and kinetic energy harvesting intended as supplementary power sources. A sealed enclosure is proposed to protect internal components from everyday exposure to rain and sweat. Expected benefits include convenient access to safety alerts, improved awareness of surrounding activity, and a wearable design suitable for daily use. However, the proposed functions require technical validation, particularly regarding detection accuracy, false alarms, battery life, comfort, durability, and reliability. Future development includes touch, gesture, or voice activation and expansion into other jewellery formats. Overall, the AEGIS Earring presents a concept for integrating personal safety technology into fashionable accessories, with its practical effectiveness to be established through prototype development and testing.
