About the Project

Traditional preclinical dental education has long depended on physical phantom heads, typodont models with disposable plastic teeth and closely supervised live-patient encounters. While foundational, these conventional training paradigms present several systemic limitations: the constant replenishment of consumable jaw models imposes heavy recurring financial burdens on educational institutions, novice students face steep learning curves that inherently pose clinical risks to live patients during preliminary clinical transitions and traditional visual assessments often lack standardized, real-time objective feedback. To overcome these critical barriers, DENTI-SIM (Dental Immersive Simulation with Haptic Feedback and AI Performance Assessment) was engineered as an advanced, immersive Virtual Reality (VR) simulation platform tailored specifically for dental undergraduates, postgraduate residents and continuous professional development. The system seamlessly couples standalone high-resolution VR headsets with dual six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DoF) haptic force-feedback devices, driven by a proprietary real-time physics engine capable of replicating micro-tactile sensations across enamel, dentin and pulp structures. Users can perform intricate procedural workflows including precise high-speed tooth drilling, complex cavity design, endodontic access and periodontal probing within an authentic three-dimensional oral cavity. The primary targets of this innovation are to lower institutional training consumable expenditure by up to 60%, drastically enhance procedural precision through spatial tracking analytics and provide students with unconstrained, risk-free repetitions to solidify clinical motor memory prior to patient contact. The fundamental novelty of DENTI-SIM resides in its integrated dynamic resistance algorithm paired with an intelligent Artificial Intelligence (AI) evaluation engine. As trainees perform virtual procedures, the system autonomously measures real-time cut depth, angulation deviation, hand stability and healthy tissue preservation, delivering instant objective scoring and mistake identification. Beyond pedagogical efficacy, DENTI-SIM presents significant commercial and institutional viability for medical and dental faculties, dental auxiliary training schools and international board certification centers seeking scalable training infrastructure. Ultimately, this project directly advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) by democratizing high-fidelity clinical training and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by spearheading digital transformation in modern medical education technology.
