About the Project

Abstract Peatland fires are a serious problem that can cause environmental damage, produce smoke and haze that affect communities, and result in economic losses. One of the challenges in dealing with fires is the need to monitor peatland conditions and detect early signs of fire so that the fire does not spread further. Therefore, FIRE-GUARD: Smart Technology for a Fire-Safe Peatland is designed as an Internet of Things (IoT)-based solution that integrates sensors, a monitoring system, a mobile application, and an automated initial response. The system uses sensors to monitor temperature, soil moisture, water level, weather conditions, and smoke or PM. Sensor data is transmitted through an IoT Gateway to be analyzed and used to determine land conditions, ranging from safe conditions to high-risk conditions and detected fires. When fire indicators meet predefined conditions, the system can activate a pump, open a valve, and spray water as an initial response to suppress small fires. If the fire cannot be controlled, information about the location, fire status, wind direction, and air quality can be sent to personnel, while communities in potentially affected areas receive early warnings. Through this system, FIRE-GUARD is expected to accelerate early detection and initial response, reduce the risk of fire spreading, help protect peatland ecosystems, and reduce the impacts of smoke and fire-related losses. Keywords: FIRE-GUARD, peatland, fire, Internet of Things, early detection, early warning.
