About the Project

Many students feel STEM is far from what they love. PianoSTEM is an educational app concept that bridges science and music by revealing the STEM principles behind piano playing. Developed by a science-stream student and pianist, it features two components: Explore Mode and Practice Lab. Explore Mode uses a virtual 88-key keyboard where each tap reveals five data blocks: a live audio wave simulator, frequency mathematics, wavelength physics, engineering insights, and a short quiz. A Her-Story Lab highlights four women pioneers. Practice Lab builds on existing practice apps, providing musical feedback plus scientific comments. This distinctive STEM layer helps learners discover science through everyday musical practice. Designed for schools, music centres, and individual learners, PianoSTEM proposes a freemium model, with free Explore Mode and a subscription-based Practice Lab, offering potential for low-cost reach across Malaysia and beyond. Currently at the mock-up stage, the concept requires further testing, particularly for microphone-tracking accuracy and user engagement. Future development could extend it to other instruments. By connecting music with STEM, PianoSTEM inspires interdisciplinary learning, nurtures curiosity, and empowers students, particularly those who may not identify with STEM, to become innovative thinkers and problem-solvers.
