About the Project
RECOPONIC: Trash to Fresh RECOPONIC is an innovative, low-cost and sustainable smart planting system that transforms household waste into valuable agricultural resources. The project integrates three concepts: Recycle, Decoration and Hydroponic, while promoting environmental sustainability and STEM education. RECOPONIC consists of four innovative components: ReGrow Peat 2.0, an organic growing medium; EcoPot 3R 2.0, a self-watering planter made from recycled materials; BioCal Fertilizer, an organic calcium-based fertilizer; and AutoMoist Ponic System, an automated irrigation system using soil moisture sensors. Experimental results demonstrated a 95% seed germination rate compared to 70% using conventional soil. Plant growth reached 7.5 cm compared to 3.2 cm after two weeks. The automated irrigation system operated within a moisture range of 40–60%. With an estimated production cost of only RM15 per set, RECOPONIC offers an affordable solution for sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation and hands-on STEM learning. The innovation supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12 and 13 while encouraging students and communities to transform waste into meaningful solutions.
