About the Project

SmartBioScreen is a low-cost health screening project that uses purple cabbage extract and smartphone technology to help users check urine pH. The idea was developed to provide a simple and accessible way for people to learn about their health without needing expensive laboratory equipment. Purple cabbage contains anthocyanins, a natural pigment that changes colour when exposed to different pH levels. In this project, purple cabbage is first processed to obtain its extract, which is then used as a natural pH indicator. When a urine sample is added, the indicator changes colour according to the acidity or alkalinity of the sample. The colour change is captured using a smartphone camera and analysed by the SmartBioScreen system to estimate the urine pH range. The application then provides information about possible health conditions that may be associated with unusual pH levels and suggests further testing when necessary. Overall, SmartBioScreen combines a natural material with digital technology to create a simple, affordable, and convenient preliminary health-screening tool for educational purposes.
