About the Project
This project explores the development of CNC-carved rubberwood batik blocks as a sustainable alternative to conventional metal blocks in the Malaysian batik industry. Traditional metal batik blocks require specialised craftsmanship, lengthy production processes, and relatively high manufacturing costs. To address these challenges, this innovation integrates locally available rubberwood with digital design and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) carving technology to produce alternative batik stamping blocks. The development process involves digital motif creation, CNC carving at different depths, wax-immersion treatment, and durability assessment. The performance of the rubberwood blocks is evaluated through wax-transfer and fabric-stamping tests, focusing on motif clarity, pattern consistency, and surface quality in comparison with conventional metal blocks. This innovation aims to provide a more accessible, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious approach to batik block production. Furthermore, it promotes the integration of traditional textile craftsmanship with modern manufacturing technology, supporting the preservation and sustainable development of Malaysia's batik heritage.
