About the Project

Limited storage capacity is a major challenge in warehouse and port operations particularly when available ground space is insufficient to accommodate increasing container storage demands. According to Jalil (2026) states that cargo increase creates high pressure on the ports and the whole logistic network. These challenges highlight the need for more efficient container storage solutions. This project proposes VERTEX, an Automated Modular Container Storage System designed to maximize port space through vertical container organisation. The system consists of a loading platform, control panel, heavy-duty lifting platform and locking mechanism. Port workers position a container on the loading platform using suitable container-handling equipment. The operator then selects an available compartment through the control panel, allowing the lifting platform to transfer the container into the selected location. The locking mechanism secures the container in place. When retrieval is required, the operator selects the container’s location and the lifting platform transfers it back to the loading area for collection. VERTEX aims to improve container organisation, reduce unnecessary container movements and enhance operational efficiency. Its modular design could accommodate different storage requirements and potentially reduce the need for additional storage land. The proposed system targets container terminals, port operators, and logistics companies worldwide. Further engineering development, cost evaluation, and safety testing are necessary to assess its feasibility for commercial implementation.
