About the Project
Vocabulary is an important part of learning English as it helps students understand texts, write clearly, and communicate effectively. However, some upper secondary students find it difficult to learn and remember new words through traditional learning methods. To address this issue, Vocab Showdown is developed as a gamified learning platform to support vocabulary development among upper secondary English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. The platform uses game-based activities, quizzes, challenges, and a scoring system to make vocabulary learning more fun and engaging. Through these activities, students can practise new words, understand their meanings, and improve their ability to use vocabulary in different contexts. The competitive elements encourage students to participate actively, challenge themselves, and monitor their learning progress. Vocab Showdown also aims to provide an interactive learning experience that supports independent learning and increases students’ motivation to learn English. Its effectiveness can be evaluated through pre- and post-intervention vocabulary tests, classroom observations, and student feedback. Overall, Vocab Showdown aims to make vocabulary learning more enjoyable, interactive, and meaningful while helping upper secondary ESL learners improve their vocabulary knowledge and confidence in using English.
